TWIN

Dimension: 91cm x 190cm

The twin size mattress is the smallest of all standard bed sizes. Also known as a single bed, the twin’s narrow width makes it ideal for single sleepers - typically children or young adults with small spaces like a studio apartment or shared bedrooms. They also make ideal daybeds and are suitable for bunk beds.

Best for: kids, bunk beds, school hostels, hospitals or single sleepers.

Room size: The minimum room size for a twin bed to fit naturally is 7 x 9.5 feet. But if you’re looking to outfit the room with cozy accessories like a desk and dresser, an 8 x 10 square foot room may be required for the bed to fit more comfortably.

TWIN XL

Dimension: 107cm x 190cm

The twin’s slightly wider cousin, the twin XL mattress, is the most popular size for college dorm rooms. A twin XL size mattress is 6 inches wider than a twin, making it perfect for growing children or adults with a small space that’s why it’s a standard mattress size for most colleges. Plus, two twin XL mattresses together make a king. This setup is ideal for a split adjustable base, so you and your partner can both customize your ideal sleeping position.

Best for: taller teenagers, single adults, hospitals, school hostels or anyone with limited space.

Room size: The minimum room size for a twin XL mattress to fit naturally is 8 x 10 feet. Twin XL beds can also work well in narrow rooms that are at least 7 feet wide.

A full is not recommended for couples who like to share the bed with pets or their children or enjoy sleeping like starfish.

Best for: young adults, couples in small rooms, couples who like to cuddle or guest rooms.

A California king will provide you and your partner with plenty of space and a little extra length.

Best for: Couples with kids or four-legged friends who want a luxurious amount of sleeping space.

Room size: A California king mattress fits best in a large master bedroom of at least 11 x 13 feet.

Which Bed Size Is The Best For Me?

If it’s time for a new mattress, you may be wondering which size is right for you. There are many factors to consider, like who will be sleeping in the bed, how much space you will need, how much room is in your bedroom, and any specific health or sleep issues you might face.

Buying a new mattress is not a one-size-fits-all situation, so it’s essential to evaluate your individual needs. If you have a history of back pain or sleep problems, you may want a free trial period to help you make sure you’re comfortable with your new mattress.

Here are some other major factors you will want to consider when choosing a mattress.

Who Will Sleep In the Bed?

Who Will Sleep In the Bed?

Will you be sharing the bed with a partner? Do your children typically sleep with you? These are questions to ask yourself before deciding on mattress size. Typically twin, twin XL, and full mattresses are meant for one person. On the other hand, queen, king, and California king beds are a good bed size for couples and any children or pets that wander into the bed in the middle of the night.

If you are going to sleep with another person, consider how close you like to sleep. If you both enjoy stretching out when sleeping, the extra room afforded by a king or California king size will be appreciated—and help you avoid any accidental thwacks if your partner rolls over in their sleep.

Your Room Size

Your Room Size

The amount of space available to you should also be considered. A larger mattress will take up more space in your bedroom, as will any other bedroom furniture, so you will need to plan accordingly.

To help you decide if there is ample space for the mattress you’re considering for your room - Leave at least two feet of space around the mattress to ensure you can move around comfortably. Also, consider door and staircase widths for maneuvering your mattress.

Your Body Size

Your Body Size

You should take your height and width into consideration when choosing a mattress. If taller than 6 feet you should consider getting a mattress with length equal or longer than 190cm. Those that are taller than 7 feet should opt for a California king bed. For those who want more space on either side of their body, a full, queen, or king bed will be the most comfortable.

Your Sleep Position

Your Sleep Position

If you move around when you sleep, are a side or combination sleeper, or just want extra space, go for a wider mattress.

Your Budget

Your Budget

The amount of money you are willing to spend on a mattress can also help you choose the right size. A king will cost more than a queen size, and a queen more than a full, etc. Beyond size, the quality, materials and type of mattress also influences prices as high-quality mattresses would cost more, but can last longer and support your body better.

Mattresses are a long-term investment. While a smaller mattress may be the right fit now, if you plan to move with your mattress or grow your family within the next 5 to 10 years, consider the next size up.

Understanding Other Common & Emerging Mattress Sizes Used In Nigeria

While the seven aforementioned Nigerian mattress sizes may feel like plenty of options to choose from, sometimes you want something a little less traditional.

Perhaps you have very distinct personal preferences. Maybe the size and shape of the room you’re decorating requires something more unique or you’ve lived abroad for long and accustomed to their bed sizes or the bed frame you already was imported or made to foreign mattress specifications.

Whatever the reason, there are numerous lesser-known mattresses (aka specialty sizes) available. From the “small single” to the almighty “Alaskan King,” here are some of the specialty mattress sizes and their bed size dimensions:

The major difference between Nigerian mattress dimensions and foreign (Us and UK size dimension) is that for Nigeria, variations occur in the width while for foreign mattresses variations occur in the length.

For instance, Nigerian Twin measures 36 x 75 inches while it's Twin XL cousin measures 42 x 75 inches - as you can see the changes only applies to the width giving more room to move around. However looking at foreign mattress Twin it measures 38 x 75 inches while it's Twin XL counterpart measures 38 x 80 inches - clearly the addition happens on the length making it ideal for taller sleepers.

This table below best explains the difference between standard foreign mattress dimensions vs standard Nigerian mattress sizes.

Foreign Vs Nigerian Mattress Size Dimensions

Mattress Sizes Nigerian Size (Inches) US, Uk Sizes (Inches)
Twin 36 x 75 38 x 75
Twin XL 42 x 75 38 x 80
Full 48 x 75 54 x 75
Full XL 54 X 75 54 X 80
Queen 60 x 75 60 x 80
King 72 x 75 76 x 80
California King 75 x 84 72 x 84
Grand King 84 x 84 84 x 84

One striking similarity to note here which usually confuses mattress shoppers is that a US, UK Full mattress is same dimensions as Nigerian Full XL mattress.

More also, due to these variations, many Nigerian local manufacturers and premium mattress stores produce custom sizes to fit specific bed frame dimensions that's why it's very essential and crucial you know the measurements of your bed frame before getting a new mattress so as to afford returns, cutting foam to fit or forcing foam into unfit mattress that ultimately reduces the mattress life-span.

Something to note is that while these international mattress sizes are irregular and specialty to us in Nigeria, they are totally regular abroad as ours become specialty over there.

While Elmira may not offer most specialty bed sizes at the moment, we offer customisation services on pre-order where we make sizes to uniquely fit your demand. You can reach out to Elmira Support team to learn more about this service.
